To promote responsible pet ownership through rehoming, education and community enrolment.

For over 140 years, the RSPCA has been protecting and caring for animals through its shelters. But we know that as soon as we build a shelter, it will be full to capacity with animals that deserve a second chance at finding a good home.

Many people avoid going to shelters because they find it too confronting – the amount of animals available can be overwhelming and many people feel bad for not being able to adopt them all! Care Centres and Petbarns provide a calm and welcoming place to meet RSPCA animals available for adoption.

RSPCA Care Centres and Petbarn also offer a wide range of pet products, expert advice, and aim to educate the community about responsible pet ownership.

The RSPCA Care Centres at both Tuggerah and Rouse Hill are shelter outreach facilities that include an adoption centre and our Rouse Hill Care Centre also has an outpatient veterinary clinic. Their main aims are to rehome more animals in a welfare friendly environment and educate the community about responsible pet ownership.

The goals of the RSPCA Care Centres are to:

• decrease euthanasia and increase adoptions

• promote responsible pet ownership through education

• provide expert advice that is accurate and in keeping with our policies

• provide a service that is of the highest standards for both animal welfare and customer service.

The Sydney Shelter located at Yagoona is currently undergoing renovations and we are looking forward to many positive improvements. At this time, we do not have any volunteer roles available to apply for. Tuggerah Care Centre Volunteer

The RSPCA Care Centre at Tuggerah is a shelter outreach facility that includes an adoption centre. The main aim of the Care Centre is to rehome more animals in a welfare friendly environment and educate the community about responsible pet ownership.

We are looking for applicants who are outgoing, enjoying interacting with people and animals, and are passionate about promoting animal wellbeing.

This volunteer role involves providing assistance to customers and the animals in their care, who visit the Care Centre. Duties will include cleaning and restocking shelves. There is also opportunity to provide basic care of the animals while they await their new homes.

Volunteer Animal Assistant

The RSPCA NSW Tuggerah Care Centre is seeking active individuals to assist through interacting and spending quality one on one time with the Care Centre animals, to enhance their wellbeing. Your assistance directly benefits the dogs, cats and pocket pets while they await adoption.

Primary Tasks:

• Customer service, including directing enquiries and providing information on the adoption process

• Restocking shelves (retail products)

• General cleaning duties, including sweeping, mopping, dusting and rubbish removal

• Walk dogs/puppies for exercise and training (in all weather conditions)

• Provide individual attention to the dogs, cats and pocket pets, including handling, socialisation and environmental enrichment

• Brushing and grooming

• Preparing feeds and feeding animals

• Pooper scooping and cleaning litter trays as required.

Knowledge and Skills Required:

• Customer service experience, with good verbal and written communication skills

• Confidence and experience handling dogs and cats (may include those you’ve cared for at home)

• Ability to follow instructions, work within a team and independently.

Essential Criteria:

• Completed a Care Centre visit, to understand the emotional aspects of the environment

• Able to travel to the Care Centre by own or public transport

• Be physically capable and willing to engage with the tasks required

• Show reliability and commitment to a rostered shift as agreed

• Tetanus vaccination

• Applicants must be over the age of 18 years.

Sydney Volunteer Videographer

The Yagoona shelter is seeking creative individuals who enjoy interacting with animals and would like to use their videography and editing skills, to help promote the animals awaiting adoption. This role involves creating short adoption YouTube videos, and assisting with generating social media content to promote the animals awaiting adoption at the shelter.

We are seeking innovative, creative volunteers who have experience in producing videos, short films or commercials etc. This role would suit two people who may want to volunteer together, one to work with the animals and the other to film. It may also suit a team of two where one specializes in filming and the other with editing.

Primary Tasks:

• Liaise with staff regarding which animals require videos
• Work as part of a team or independently, to take footage of the adoption animals for short promotional videos and Instagram.
• Assist with capturing and preparing material for social media applications
• Spend time with the animals if required to gain their confidence (some animals may be wary of cameras, where as others love the attention and opportunity to show off!)
• Help keep the shelter clean – pooper scooping if required while the dogs are out for their filming session
• Edit footage and liaise with staff regarding changes and special promotions.

Knowledge and Skills Required

• Developed videography skills
• Developed skills in preproduction- pitching design, lighting, camera, and recording/filming
• Developed skills in post production-editing, music, sound mixing, and copyright,
• Have access to and have a high level of proficiency with using editing software
• skills to the preparation of a wide range of social media materials
• Confidence, ability, and experience with handling dogs &(small and large) and cats (this can include animals that you have helped take care of at home)
• Confidence with filming animals (these may from time to include larger animals and birds, rabbits and guinea pigs.
• Ability to work as part of a team, or independently
• Good communication skills, including verbal and written

Desirable:

• Enthusiast to professional photography skills
• Experience in film, television, commercials and marketing

Requirements:

• Able to get to the shelter by own transport or public transport
• Be physically fit, and able to move around the animals as needed
• Able to commit to filming, and editing once a week/fortnightly for a min of six months
• Able to use own equipment to produce high quality videos
• Have visited the shelter within the last two years
• Applicants for this role must be over the age of 18 years.
• Comply with all WH&S, and animal handling guidelines, to ensure high standards of care are maintained

Shifts available:

The times available for volunteers to film are:

Monday to Friday 10:30 to 2:30 pm
Sunday 10:30am to 12:00 pm

Shift length may vary between ½ hour to 1 hour depending skill level, and environmental factors.

Considations:

Please consider carefully if you have the time to commit to volunteering for the next six months. The time commitment each week/fortnightly will depend on the individuals skill level. We may be able to accept offers on monthly volunteering (depending on shift availability, skill level, and experience).

If you have not visited the Sydney Yagoona Shelter recently, please visit the shelter during opening hours before applying as it will give you an opportunity to familiarise yourself with the environment and give you an opportunity to determine if you will be able to travel weekly/fortnightly for a minimum of six months (particularly if you are coming via public transport, as there are limit public transport options).

Selected applicants will undergo an interview for the role. The successful applicants will be required to attend an orientation/induction as well as a briefing on animal handling prior to commencing their role.

Central Coast – Kennel Assistant Volunteer

The RSPCA Central Coast Shelter is looking for dedicated individuals, passionate about animal welfare, to give hands on help in the kennel environment of this busy shelter. The role involves helping keep the kennel environment clean, and being part of our shelter based training and enrichment program. This specifically involves training, exercising and providing environmental enrichment for the dogs. Our program is important for enhancing the well-being of dogs in the shelter environment, and provides a great benefit in helping them find new homes.

All volunteers with direct animal contact roles are required to have an up to date tetanus vaccination. Successful applicants who do not have one will need one prior to starting their first shift.

We ask for a minimum commitment of three hours per week for a minimum of six months. This helps the volunteer gain knowledge and skills required for the role and ensures time and effort put in by our staff in training volunteers is of benefit to the animals in our care.

• Walk dogs and take them to exercise areas.

• Provide individual attention to the dogs, including handling, training, and socialisation.

• Assist staff with pooper scooping, cleaning, hosing dog kennels and yards.

• Changing bedding, top up water bowls, and enrichment tools (eg fill Kong toys).

• Provide environmental enrichment for the dogs.

• Prepare feeds and feeding animals.

• Assist with taking dirty blankets to the laundry and rubbish removal.

• Grooming duties as required (bathing and brushing).

Selected applicants will undergo an interview for the role. The successful applicant will be required to attend an orientation/induction, as well as a briefing on animal handling and RSPCA processes prior to commencing their role. All volunteers must have an up to date tetanus vaccination prior to starting their first shift.

Shifts are available 7 days a week and are subject to availability.
