• Petitioning Australian Government – Joe Ludwig

Make the RSPCA accountable and answerable for their actions

    1. Petition by  A. Porter Crookwell, Australia

The RSPCA are currently not answerable to anyone, they follow no set process when it comes to upholding Animal Cruelty Legislation. They will give one owner months to comply with an order from them when there is clearly an issue, yet others will have animals seized immediately when there is no visible problem with them? The process they follow should be understandable to all who are following a case, not cloaked behind phrases like its under investigation or we are monitoring the situation.
There is no way to appeal a decision made by the RSPCA after seizure, their word is final. No animal they take should be put to sleep without due process of appeal.
If the RSPCA’s decision has been successfully appealed the animal or animals should be returned to the owner at no cost to them. No animal should be put to sleep if it has been offered a decent home by either an individual or another shelter. EVER
There needs to be a higher independent authority that people can complain about the RSPCA’s actions to, one which has the power to question them and overide their decisions.
The RSPCA should not work under the same department as vets are registered the way they are now in some states. This has the ability to cause and be seen as a conflict of interest as Vets have been known to not want to go against the RSPCA for fear of losing their licences.

To:
Australian Government – Joe Ludwig, Minister of Agriculture
E Thumpkin, RSPCA
P Wright, RSPCA
S Shellick, RSPCA
L Rhiannon, The Greens
Make the RSPCA accountable and answerable for their actions

Sincerely,
[Your name]

RSPCA have gone way to far.. not only with the disgraceful number of animals they kill each year, But also their bullying and stand-over tactics against ‘no kill’ rescue shelters like Moorook in SA. I am a professional dog behaviour specialist. The number of dogs (1 in 4) being killed in their shelters for behaviour related issues is a disgrace. As a professional and expert on dog behaviour, there is no way 1 in 4 dogs deserve to die!

How we treat our animals is a reflection on our morality as a society. It is our responsibility to ensure this organisation is driven by integrity rather than profits.

I volunteer at the castlemaine Rspcia shelter and the amount of animals i know to have been killed all because theyve been overly energtic and bouncy has been a cause for concern for me. I know of one Kelpie who was put down who, if he’d been given a chance on a farm, would have been a brillant working dog but he was put down all because he didnt meet their “tests”! He was only 12 months old and untrained so still only a puppy!

The RSPCA is a law unto themselves, nothing they do is transparent. Why is it that rescue organisations with no funding can manage a low percentage kill rate and the RSPCA that profited $81. M has a kill rate of over 60%. Even when rescue groups advise RSPCA they have a forever home for an animal the RSPCA refuse to negotiate and opt to have the animal put to sleep. There needs to be a complete review of this system, because at it stands it does not work. The answer is compulsory desexing yet every department turns a blind eye WHY?

The RSPC is heavily funded by taxpayers and by private donors. Their duty of care is to the ANIMALS. Yet they are euthanizing THOUSANDS of animals every year and you do NOT see re-homing exercises from them – ever! You do NOT see the RSPCA speaking out against mass cruelty to animals either. You see them hobnobbing with government and big business, paying their top guys big money, and keeping well out of ‘trouble.’ Meanwhile dozens of smaller, underfunded animal advocacy groups are doing the hard yards for animals’ rights. With $25 MILLION dollars a year they have the money to lobby for animals in ways that others cannot. Nobody checks on them. Nobody calls them to account. They do NOTHING to educate people on the rights of animals … just give their cash-earning ‘tick of approval’ to companies that pretend to rear animals humanely. I want them audited from top to bottom. Put Lynn White in charge.

Find it disgusting and outrageous what they did with the Moorook Shelter. Instead in assisting them to safe the animals by donating food and other items in need they taken the poor animals to have put down instead of replacing them in good homes as there was nothing wrong with them…all i can say is goodluck and keep up the good work to the Moorook Shelter as for the RSPCA…get of your wild horse and do some real work….!!!!

Accountability is overdue and a stern reminder such as a funding suspension whilst a full investigation is done regarding the hundreds and hundreds of cases of power abuses is undertaken. They are running amok with the public donations which is simply unacceptable and desperately require reigning in.

because the welfare of Animals is more important than than a corporation and organisations like RCPCA who think they can bully smaller shelters no kill shelters to bend to their way. They need to be made accountable and have clear process in place. They should also be made to give clear and concise answers to questions asked of them but the general public and the media not fob them off with answers that mean nothing.

Because they need to know that people are not going to sit back why they keep letting animal abusers swagger around and do as they please yet someone who has made a little mistake and can be taught a better way is being punished harshly…….Animal abusers need action on them straight away. Like most uncivilized people animal abusers are more likely to arch up to the RSPCA who become frightened or intimidated by the abuser and keep giving them time to fix a problem Well im sick of it if they are going to keep letting people act like this then they should be held responsible

Because thay should be accountable for their actions and work closer with all types of rescue organizations. I was once a member now I refuse to donate to them. I donate to rescue groups who try far harder to rehome animals than the RSPCA do.

This is important to me because RSPCA’s kill rate is an abomination. They rarely attend when complaints are lodged and are hesitant to prosecute big business as demonstrated with several recent high profile cases.

RSPCA, get off your fire breathing dragons and have some REAL compassion and love for all the creatures great and small.

You’ve clearly lost sight of what its all about, the welfare of animals to live happy healthy lives, not be destroyed for petty reasons and mundane human gain.

Grow up, get your act together and start SAVING lives and putting a stop to ACTUAL cruelty!

I was a financial supporter of the RSPCA for many years – until I realised what actually happens behind their closed doors. Like any organization with autonomy and too much power, the RSPCA has become enamoured with its own marketing and publicity and needs to be held accountable – particularly for the intolerably high death rates of cats and dogs in their “care”. There is much hype around the name – but little substance. Time the RSPCA went back to doing what it should do – caring for all animals, keeping animals from cruelty – and educating the public. Time to spend those millions a little more wisely.

RSPCA need to have more accountability for the actions. So many times there is no logic in what they do; seems to be at the whim of whoever is working that day. They do need to have more power in some areas, but need to be following same regulations in every state.

I’m a volunteer for the Moorook Animal Shelter, the most recent target of the RSPCA. We were bullied into ‘surrendering’ the animals, 4 were PTS immediately and we apparently are not entitled to have information on the remaining 5 as we ‘surrendered’. There are so many reasons for signing this petition which other people will cover, but I’ll keep it simple and personal and just say that withholding this information gives us no closure to move on and is affecting the health of our volunteers and shelter manager.

How about you stop puppy farmers and people known as back yard breeders cross breeding and selling the pups on the side of the road for 50 bucks or so without any resonsibility, stop the pet shops from selling cross bred pups in windows who support these people before you go after the honest, genuine breeders who actually screen people before they sell their animals? People that actually care whats in their dogs lines and breeding.

the RSPCA kill 60% of the animals they come across… this is not what it was set up to do… it was set up to SAVE lives and unfortunately the general public still believe they do this!… they stand over No Kill shelters, forcibly remove their animals and kill them as they believe this to be a better course of action than actual rehoming… they have lost the original intention to save animal lives and are now drunk with their own power… shame on them… they need to be honest with the public about what they are actually doing… 60% kill…they need to be made accountable for their ‘power over’ mentality and their lack of compassion toward aniimal lives… killing all the animals is not an answer… if they worked with other shelters and embraced a no kill policy they would be much more credible in their claims… I will never donate a dollar to them again, I love animals too much to fund their slaughter house mentality

The RSPCA should be working to protect animals from abuse, neglect and all other forms of mistreatment. They should work in cooperation with other agencies, including volunteer-run no-kill shelters, to achieve these goals. Considering that a large amount of their funding comes from taxpayers, and also because they wield such extreme powers which in some cases exceed even those of police, they should operate in an open and transparent manner, with an independent body overseeing their actions.

Currently, this corrupt organisation acts secretly, answering to no one, entering private property without warrant or due cause, stealing property without due cause and then killing these healthy animals which were not in their care and they had no cause to steal, and using threats and intimidation to advance their own agenda, without regard for the welfare of any of the animals they are supposed to be protecting.

it is wrong to condemn to genuine actions of people trying to make a difference in the lives of otherwise homeless creatures. these animals have the right to live a happy life. their only misfortune is not having a good home to begin with. I am sure that the rspca does good work a lot of the time but surely animal shelters other than the rspca, should be helped and not punished. these wonderful people are helping the community (animals and people) and working hard whilst others (including me) sit back and watch! the rspca needs to open its eyes and its heart. its seems to be too easy to solve issues with a single injection. So sad.

Animals should always come first and i feel the society has lost their way, Animals no longer come first. Too many Healthy Animals are put down by the RSPCA . Small NO KILL Shelters do an Amazing Job of taking care off and rehoming many more Animals than the RSPCA , with little or no funding. They certanly dont have the BIG DOLLARS that the RSPCA do and yet do a much better job.Its Time the RSPCA were taken to task and investigated. They seem to have plenty of money for TV shows, commercials, Big Offices and nice cars, oh and big salaries, but NONE when it comes to SAVING ANIMALS……
